MSBM Board Member Contributes to Patient Blood Management Education in Southern Africa In recent years, board member of the Medical Society for Blood Management (MSBM) Mr Shannon Farmer has been a regular guest lecturer on blood conservation and patient blood management in Southern Africa. For each of the last three years

he has been an invited speaker to various medical groups in Namibia. In 2005 he was the invited guest international speaker at the Medical Association of Namibia’s Annual Medical Congress held in Swakopmund and in October 2006 he was a guest speaker in Namibia and South Africa, giving 10 presentations in all including one lecture to the lay public with 500 in attendance. In October and November 2006, graduating nurses from the University of Namibia at both the Windhoek and the Oshakati campuses were presented with a copy of the book “Your Body Your Choice” co-authored by Shannon Farmer and David Webb. The books were presented by Mrs Majorie Katjire, Head of Department, Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences, University of Namibia. Mrs Katjire informed the nurses that arrangements were in place for the subject of bloodless medicine and surgery to be included in the curriculum and the book “Your Body Your Choice” to be used as a textbook for the fourth-year nursing students. MSBM and its members are making a growing contribution to international education initiatives in patient blood management.
