Donat Spahn is Professor and Chairman of the Department of Anaesthesiology at the University Hospital Zurich (USZ), Switzerland.

He is President of the Anesthesiology Board Examination Committee of the Swiss Society of Anaesthesiology. Since 2005 he has been active as a WHO Consultant/Trainer in Blood Transfusion.

Professor Spahn has been awarded numerous prizes, including the Prize of the Medical Faculty of the University of Lausanne, the Prize for free papers at the Annual Meeting of the Swiss Society for Anaesthesiology and Reanimation as well as the Pfizer Prize.

He has over 100 publications in the scientific literature, is the author of nine books on Anaesthesiology and has contributed chapters to several major textbooks. He has organised many scientific meetings, is the recipient of numerous grants, does a great deal of editorial work in scientific journals and is a regular reviewer of seven journals.

He is President of the Scientific Committee of the Swiss Society of Anaesthesiology (SGAR) and member of several working groups within this Society.

Professor Spahn is Chairman of the Subcommittee on "Transfusion and Haemostasis" of the European Society of Anaesthesiology (ESA) and Scientific Board Member of Network for Advancement of Transfusion Alternatives (NATA).
